BLOG POST#3: RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN SHOTS
One of the most epic and favorite scenes of all mine is a
part from "A Bronx Tale." This scene is a result of racial tension between a
group of Italian savages that call themselves “the Deuces Wild” giving a royal
beat down on a couple of African American passing through “their neighborhood”.
However, the main protagonist of the movie Calergo rather known as “C” is not a
prejudice. During the ambush he tries to protect one of the African Americans
from getting beat up but does not want to make it look obvious to his best
friends. If he shows any sympathy towards these African Americans, his friends
will call him a “coward” “dog”, or tell him he has no heart. The relationship between the story
telling and feel of this piece is revolutionary. Before Slick throws a right
hook to one of the victims, the music sets the tone of the scene by starting
out very calm then all of a sudden all hell breaks loose. Using such relaxing
music for a hardcore scene was genius because it takes you into their minds as
though beating up these African Americans is a daily routine and therapeutic. The
relationship to the sound and images are demonstrated perfectly. The foley
artist does a great job of creating a lot of thuds, slams, and screeches as for
the sounds of punches being thrown, their bodies hitting the floor, and bikes
slamming the pavement. The shots are
organized in very short clips and are obvious cuts but give the audience a
traumatic effect. For example, there are tons of close up and up
angle-congested shots of the posse’s faces when they are beating up on the
African Americans. This creates a chaotic illusion as if you are the one
getting punched in the face by the Italians. There are also long shots that get
every member in the street to fit onto the screen that creates a look as if you
are a person in an apartment building watching the action. The movement between
shots is hand held which create a hectic fast paced scene. These are perfectly
edited and the cuts are right on point.
